High achievers think about growth all the time.
Why is that? They know that if they improve, they can grow and keep on winning.
Growth doesn’t happen by itself and the clearer you are about how to make it happen, the more likely you are to make it happen.
Grow or Die. I heard those words early in my career and they haunted me but they were true.
- You are either inspired or depressed.
- You are either improving or stagnating.
- You are either speeding up or slowing down.
That’s why I think about growth all the time because growth is the key to improving and winning.
So it helps to be clear about exactly how the process works. Although big, flashy growth comes in surges, it comes after a lot of unglamorous and consistent hard work.
It’s like chess. There’s only one move that results in a checkmate, but you’re never going to get there if you haven’t been making a lot of good moves leading up to that moment.
Sucess for growth must be set up.
The groundwork has got to be laid. Things have got to be put in place e.g. skills, support, people, product, refinements have got to be made before the big surge in production can be there.

When you know this, you feel excited about putting in the extra effort and doing things the right way when people are not watching. That is how you separate yourself from all the people who cut corners.
General consistency wins every time.
You have to have a goal to get your engine cranked, but you need to have a deadline too.
Businesses and games are like life. They don’t last forever.
We’re all operating with limited time.
That’s why you want to do everything in your power because success is never guaranteed. You want to stack the odds as much in your favor as quickly as possible.
The reason why is because, in spite of the fact that success is never guaranteed, you can do things that will make it almost inevitable.
Just like the Olympics, there are no participation awards on Wallstreet. That’s why it’s so insanely destructive to pretend to children that winning doesn’t matter.
The Importance of Being Consistent
I’ll never forget when I was 12 years old, my father was driving, there was music on the radio and he was bouncing his foot on the accelerator to the beat. He’s smiling real big and happy.
We thought it was really funny when the card stopped. It seems the pounding on the accelerator had caused the linkage to the carburetor to disconnect and that was the end of the party.
The car came to a halt and he had to get out, lift the hood, and reconnect it.
Lesson learned: You can’t play the drums with the accelerator pedal.
You got to have long steady pressure on that accelerator pedal to keep the car moving so you can get where you want to go.
For example, if you’re a farmer, you need to put a lot of energy into planting the crop in the beginning and let them start to grow. But you still have to keep an eye on things so they stay watered and the weeds don’t choke them out.
Another example is with your kids, you always have to know where they are and how they are doing. If you forget about them for too long, bad things can happen in a hurry.
Many things in life work the same way as raising children. You don’t know how fast they’re going to grow and when they’re going to mature, but you still need to provide food, shelter, clothing, love, etc.
Then they’ll bloom in their own time.

The Bottom Line on Growth
You need to focus on what you can control.
You can’t control the results. The results are probably coming to a surge because they are unpredictable but you can continue to set up the odds of success every hour of every day by your consistent effort, activity, and attention.
When it all comes together, BAM, there’s an explosion of growth.
Staying on track and growth comes in surges, but it only comes when you’ve been putting in the consistent time, energy and effort.
It all adds up so focus on consistency in effort and activity, and you will set yourself up for some amazing surges and success down the road.
